Do retaining walls need engineering?

In most BC municipalities a wall over about 1.2 metres needs an engineer, and some need a permit below that if they sit near a property line or carry a driveway. We dig to the engineered drawings when there are drawings, and we’ll tell you when a wall is into that territory.

Why do retaining walls fail?

Water, almost every time. A wall without drainage rock and a way for water to get out is holding back saturated soil, which weighs far more than dry soil. The fix is in the excavation and the backfill, not the face you see.

Can you work on a steep lot with tight access?

Usually. Smaller machines reach places a full-size excavator can’t, and some jobs are staged from the top of the bank. Send photos with your quote request and we’ll tell you straight.
