Kelowna digs differently depending on how far up the hill you are. Down near the lake, in Lower Mission and the older central neighbourhoods, you’re mostly in sandy and silty ground that digs easily but needs care around water. Up in Upper Mission, Kettle Valley, Black Mountain, and Dilworth, lots are benched into slopes, rock sits close to the surface, and most retaining walls exist because the grade left no choice.
Much of that hillside sits in the City’s development-permit territory, and creeks and lakeshore carry riparian setbacks. Check what applies before booking a machine. Infill is the other Kelowna specialty: carriage houses and backyard projects where the dig is simple but getting a machine to it is not. Tight access decides more Kelowna quotes than soil does.

FAQ
Often. Steep slopes, retaining walls, and anything near a creek or the lakeshore can trigger a development permit or an engineer. Check with the City before you commit to a date, and we’ll tell you what the dig itself involves.
Usually. Smaller excavators fit through surprisingly little, and some jobs work over or around obstacles. Send photos of the access route with your quote request.
Near the lake, sand and silt. On the benches, expect rock sooner than you’d like. We’ll tell you what we’re likely to hit before we start, and what it means if we hit it.
